PEMBROKE — Moore County businessman George Little has been appointed to the board of trustees at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Gov. Pat McCrory announced the appointment on Friday.

Little, who lives in Southern Pines, is a former secretary of the N.C. Department of Natural and Economic Resources and was a gubernatorial candidate in 2004.

“Given his distinguished record of public service in higher education and state government, George brings a wealth of invaluable experience and relationships to help UNC Pembroke advance our mission,” UNCP Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings said. “We are especially excited to welcome another trustee from Moore County, an important part of our service region that presents tremendous opportunities to expand our impact.”

Little’s statewide leadership role in higher education spans 35 years. He has served as a trustee for Sandhills Community College since 1981, including 31 years as board chairman. For the past decade, he served on the board of trustees at Western Carolina University.

He previously served as president of the North Carolina Association of Community Colleges. Little was a board member for the Association of Community College Trustees from 1997 to 2003, including one year as chairman. He currently serves on the N.C. Association of Community College’s executive committee.

Little is president of George W. Little & Associates, an insurance agency he founded in 1977. He is a member of the board of directors for Partners in Progress, the economic development organization for Moore County. He is also chairman of the Pinehurst Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

He has served as vice chairman of the N.C. Economic Development Board and on the boards for Spring Mid-Atlantic Telecom, N.C. Citizens for Business and Industry, N.C. Free, and Sanford Association of Financial and Insurance Advisors. He is a member of the Sandhills Area Chamber of Commerce, Sandhills Kiwanis Club and Southern Pines Elks Club.

Little is a graduate of the University of North Carolina. He and his wife, Wanda, have two daughters, a son, and seven grandchildren.

Little’s term on the UNCP board will run through June 30, 2019. He replaces Jarette Sampson, who resigned in May.
