WINNABOW (AP) — An historic site in Brunswick County is closed until Tuesday after burglars broke in over the weekend, causing some property damage and taking some historic artifacts considered invaluable.

Local media outlets report that vandals broke into the Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site southwest of Wilmington early Sunday.

Site manager Jim McKee says the loss from cash stolen and property damaged was about $1,500.

But McKee says it’s hard to put a value on the historic items taken. They include three Civil War-era uniform buttons, a Spanish coin and a replica cannonball.

Brunswick Town was a pre-Revolutionary War settlement destroyed by the British in 1776 and never rebuilt. Fort Anderson was constructed by the Confederates on top of the old settlement during the Civil War.
