FAYETTEVILLE — Fayetteville Publishing Co. is selling The Fayetteville Observer and other businesses to GateHouse Media LLC, the newspaper announced today.

North Carolina’s oldest newspaper, the Observer has been owned by the family of the late Ashton Wilson Lilly for 93 years.

According to the paper, Publisher Charles Broadwell announced the sale, expected to take effect Monday, in a memo to employees this morning. The terms of the sale were not disclosed.

The sale also includes the company’s printing division; its digital business, fayobserver.com; Liberty Point Media digital agency; the Iwanna classified-advertising publications and related businesses; The Sandspur, Acento Latino and Fort Bragg Life and the company’s military publishing division.

The Fayetteville Observer was first published as a weekly in 1816 and has been a daily paper since 1896. Fayetteville Publishing Co. was established in 1923.

GateHouse publishes more than 620 publications across 35 states. In 2015, the company acquired 34 daily newspapers, according to its website.
