RALEIGH — A Robeson County magistrate has been appointed to serve on the state’s Domestic Violence Commission.

Rudy Locklear begins his term on Sept. 1 and will be sworn in Oct. 28 in Raleigh.

Locklear, who is president of the North Carolina Magistrates Association, was appointed by the governor at the request of North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore. Locklear’s term will expire Aug. 31, 2018.

The Domestic Violence Commission assesses statewide needs related to domestic violence and sexual assault.

“I’m looking forward to this new role as an opportunity to provide input to improve our states Domestic Violence services, policies and programs to those in need from the perspective of the magistrates across the state,” Locklear said in a statement.

Locklear has been a North Carolina magistrate for more than 10 years. He serves on the board of directors for the Southeastern Family Violence Center and the Robeson County Domestic Violence Task Force.

Locklear previously worked as a deputy with the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office. He is an instructor at Robeson Community College in the Criminal Justice Department and Basic Law Enforcement Training program and an adjunct professor at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke in the Department of Criminal Justice and Sociology.
