CHARLOTTE (AP) — Former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon is expected to be released from prison next week.

Cannon pleaded guilty to public corruption and has been in the Morgantown, West Virginia, Federal Correctional Institution since Nov. 18, 2014, where he was to serve a sentence of nearly four years. The required time served has been reduced under various policies and incentives available for all federal prisoners.

Local news outlets report that Cannon is expected to be released Thursday.

The 49-year-old Democrat will be on home confinement until Jan. 25.

Cannon was charged with public corruption after taking more than $50,000 in bribes, mostly from undercover FBI agents posing as out-of-town real estate developers.

The FBI began its investigation in 2010, when Cannon was a member of Charlotte City Council.
