LUMBERTON — Purple Door Productions, a resident theater group of Robeson County, is set to open its season with an American comedy classic, Neil Simon’s “California Suite.”
“California Suite” is, as Purple Door Artistic Director Jeanne Koonce puts it, a light-hearted, compassionate look at love, life, marriage and everything in between.
“We wanted to open up with something light and fun,” Koonce said. “We want people to come and have a heck of a good time — it’s Neil Simon, one of the best comic writers ever.”
The winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Simon has written more than 30 plays, including “Barefoot in the Park” and “The Odd Couple,” and is the most nominated writer for Oscar and Tony awards.
Presented in association with the Robeson Community College Scholarship Foundation, California Suite will be performed at the A.D. Lewis Theatre in Lumberton. The show began Thursday and will continue this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m each day and on Oct. 2 with a 3 p.m. show.
Performing the comedy are six local players and two professionals from the Fayetteville area, Denver McCullough and Ronda Brocki.
After the season opener, Purple Door Productions will go on to perform a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat,” and plans a murder mystery dinner theater, also.
“We want to show the wide diversity that we can offer to the county,” Koonce said. “We are trying to set up a dinner theatre as a regular part of the season. Then we come back with Joseph — a big, family-oriented musical.”
