LUMBERTON — The Lumber River has fallen below flood stage in Lumberton following historic flooding caused by Hurricane Matthew.

A gauge on the river at West Fifth Street measured 12.8 feet this morning. Flood stage is 13 feet. No river observations are available for the second gauge in Lumberton because it is located at the Lumberton water plant, which has been shut down. That portion of the river, however, was forecast to fall below flood stage Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Following Hurricane Matthew, the Lumber River in Lumberton reached about 24 feet, topping previous records by more than 3 feet. The Oct. 8 storm dropped more than a foot of rain in Lumberton, with higher totals recorded throughout Robeson County.

Robeson has been lucky since, receiving only about a half-inch of rain since Matthew’s downpour. Sunny skies remain in the forecast through Sunday.

The effects of Matthew’s flooding are still being felt in Robeson County, where there are more than 130 weather-related road closures and still 202 combined at two emergency shelters, Bill Sapp Recreation Center and the Robeson County Fairgrounds.
