WILMINGTON (AP) — New Hanover County sheriff’s deputies say a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Reserves killed his estranged girlfriend before killing himself.

Local media outlets reported that 26-year-old Justin Hakeem Walker of Wilmington died after shooting himself in the head around 2:30 p.m. Monday at a shooting range.

Sheriff’s Lt. Jerry Brewer says Walker went to the range and rented three handguns and shot himself in the head. A note near his body told authorities they would find his girlfriend dead in his apartment.

Wilmington Police spokeswoman Linda Rawley says officers entered Walker’s apartment and found the body of 23-year-old Rebecca Jones.

Rawley said an autopsy is being performed to determine how Jones died.

Brewer said Walker was a sergeant with Company F, 4th Tank Battalion, 4th Marine Division at Camp Lejeune.
