PEMBROKE — The efforts of Keep Robeson County Clean and Green to make the county a cleaner and more pleasing place have not been blown away by Hurricane Matthew, which has only made more work to do.

Kristina Cummings is among members of Keep Robeson County Clean and Green who met on Tuesday.

She said the recent flooding has not stopped any specific projects but because school has not yet started, plans to work with school children have been put on hold for the time being.

She is also recycling coordinator of Robeson County Solid Waste and she encourages those who wish to organize a cleanup to contact her at the county’s Solid Waste office at 910-618-5523.

“If anyone has a project they have going on or if they have a cleanup they want to organize they can call me for bags. Safety vests are available for large-scale cleanups also,” Cummings said. The safety vests have to be returned.

Cummings encourages groups to help keep the landscape beautiful by adopting roadways through the Adopt-A-Highway program. The recent floods have taken trash once hidden from view and deposited it in plain view, making the need for cleanup more obvious.

While recovery from flooding is still under way, trash collection sites are open extra hours, Cummings said.

They are: Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sundays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Collection sites are: 1884 Balance Farm Road, St. Pauls; 59 King Tuck Road, St. Pauls; 15 Knapdale Road, Parkton; 1181 Lewis McNeill Road, Red Springs; 1935 Morgan J. Road, Shannon; 459 Beaver Dam Road, Shannon; 6061 Prospect Road, Maxton; 584 Branch Road, Lumberton; 66 Daystorm Drive, Maxton; 3096 Midway Road, Maxton; 38 Hubbard Road, Rowland; 528 N. Chicken Road, Lumberton; 3141 Lowe Road, Lumberton; 219 S. Robeson Road, Fairmont; 2819 Marietta Road, Fairmont; 8072 Wire Grass Road, Fairmont; 248 Sanchez Drive, Lumberton; 182 Lamb Road, Lumberton; 1559 Ivey Road, Lumberton; 191 Hammonds Road, Lumberton; and 41 Sand Rock Road, Fairmont.

On Nov. 8, Keep Robeson County Clean and Green, along with Robeson County Solid Waste Services, will hold “Tarp Tuesday.” The goal is to prevent garbage from flying out of the backs of trucks when people carry their trash to garbage collection sites.

“Keep North Carolina Beautiful has given the county tarps to distribute to communities so we are going to take them out to our 20 collection sites,” Cummings said. “It will be on a first-come, first-served basis. People who come in trucks that are uncovered will receive a tarp to secure their loads as they bring them into the collection sites to minimize the risk of garbage falling out of their vehicle and littering the roadways.”
