LUMBERTON — Disaster relief teams that have come to Lumberton in the wake of Hurricane Matthew are making themselves available to help homeowners with cleanup that is related to damage from the historic flooding from the Oct. 8 storm.

According to information from the city of Lumberton, the teams will assist with the removal of insulation, Sheetrock and flooring, as well as the cutting down of trees.

The direct number to call to be placed on a list to get help from these volunteers is 1-800-451-1954. People in need of help are encouraged to call that number.

City officials are also working to dispel false information concerning eelgibility for FEMA assistance. Homeowners who begin muck out, tear out and clean out of their homes do not make themselves ineligible for help from FEMA. City officials say that work should begin immediately to prevent the spread of dangerous mold.
