MAXTON — The Maxton Board of Commissioners on Thursday established the town’s first Beautification Committee.

According to Town Manager Kate Bordeaux, the committee will consist of two commissioners and five residents from different areas of the town.

“We want this to be a true demographic group,” she said. “We’re cleaning up the town now and we are at the point that we want to make the town attractive.”

The commissioners also adopted a parade ordinance.

“We have a lot of parades and this ordinance will require anyone wishing to hold a parade to come forward to the town office,” she said. “They will have to give information such as the purpose of the parade, if there will be road stops, how many people they expect, and if there will be vendors. This information is needed so that we can manage the parade.”

In other business, the commissioners on Thursday:

— Agreed to study the possibility of getting a grant to buy a street sweeper. Bordeaux said that current one is “on its last legs.”

— Recognized Shawn Phillips, a Public Works Department employee, as the town’s Employee of the Month.
