Lumber River Workforce Development recognizes five

LUMBERTON — Five Robeson County residents were recognized last week by the Lumber River Workforce Development Board for their work with the Workforce Investment Act Program.
Among the recipients was Carolyn Floyd-Robinson of Lumberton, who received the Youth Council Member of the Year
“She was chosen for this prestigious award by her peers not only for the leadership she has provided, but also for the commitment she has displayed while serving through the year,” said Holly Brewington, marketing specialist for the Lumber River Council of Governments/Lumber River Workforce Development Board.
Floyd-Robinson is the CEO of New Life Services Inc. in Lumberton. She received her bachelor’s degree in social work from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 2005 and a master’s in social work in 2007. Floyd-Robinson is a member of the Mental Health Policy Committee in North Carolina.
“I’m really humble and grateful that I was able to be honored in assisting children to reach their goals,” Floyd-Robinson said.
Telisha Locklear of Maxton was recognized as the Workforce Investment Act Adult of the Year; Dameon Rogers Jr. of Fairmont was recognized as the Older Youth of the Year; and Zechariah Bird of Pembroke was named the Younger Youth of the Year.
In addition, Michael Atwood of Lumber Bridge was recognized as the “All About Green” Participant of the Year.
Along with the five Robeson County residents, Prestage Foods Inc. were recognized as the Workforce Investment Act Business of the Year.
“We are very honored and pleased that our company was able to contribute to the local and state economy and help improve the workforce training,” said Dayra Christoff, human resources director at Prestage Foods Inc.
Prestage Foods Inc. uses the Robeson County JobLink Career Center to hire and train employees. The company has a plant in St. Pauls.
The Workforce Investment Act is a federal program designed to address the employment and training needs of adults, dislocated workers and young people.
Participants are selected on two criteria: the barriers or hardships they overcame to complete the program; and the nominee’s accomplishments. Businesses were selected on contributions to the local/state economy and improved employment and training opportunities.
Nominations were submitted by Robeson Community College, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and the Robeson County JobLink Career Center, all partners of the Lumber River Workforce Development Board.
Robeson Community College operates the WIA Older Youth program in Robeson County. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke operates the WIA Younger Youth program and the Robeson County JobLink Career Center operates the WIA Adult and Dislocated Worker programs in Robeson County.
The board oversees the WIA programs for Bladen, Hoke, Richmond, Robeson and Scotland counties.
Participants from each county were recognized at the banquet.
Jay Todd of Scotland County received the Dr. Stanley A. Richardson Workforce Development Board Member of the Year award.
