LUMBERTON — Communications giant Verizon Wireless will be opening yet another retail location within the next few months on Fayetteville Road.
Construction of the new location, which takes the place of Friendly’s restaurant, directly beside Smithfield’s Chicken & BBQ, began on April 16 and is expected to be completed sometime during the month of August.
“After we are finished building the shell in August we will hand over the building to the Verizon folks who will make the building their own,” said Mike O’Neil, owner of O’Neil Construction, which is based out of Monroe. “Typically they will probably have the place open for business 10 weeks after we complete construction.”
Lumberton is already home to one Verizon Wireless store, at 3211 Fayetteville Road, but the new location is expected to be larger than the average location, at 4,500 square feet.
“We had to demo the Friendly’s restaurant entirely for this new location,” said O’Neil. “It is roughly 600 feet larger.”
Verizon Wireless provides wireless services to an estimated 122 million subscribers across the nation. The wireless provider remains a relatively young company, having first formed in 2000 after a merger between Bell Atlantic and the GTE Corporation.
Currently the New Jersey-based company has more than 2,000 retail locations throughout the United States.
