LUMBERTON — Two people filed for office on Thursday, one for the Board of Education and the other for District Court judge.

Harold Hunt filed as a candidate for the District 4 seat on the Board of Education. Incumbent Mitchell “Bosco” Locklear and challenger Charles Bullard have also filed to run for the seat.

Hunt is a lifelong resident of Robeson County, a retired military veteran, and a Methodist minister.

His goal as a school board member, he said, will be to identify ways to use education to prepare young people to become successful. He identified drop-out rates, career advisement, home-school relations, teacher morale, and financial management as concerns.

“It has been a lifelong desire of mine to be an advocate for the people of Robeson County …,” he said. “Through the many years of experience I have on different boards and agencies, both local and national, I feel that I possess the traits needed to help bring change and improvement to our educational system.”

Timothy J. Peterkin, an attorney from Red Springs, filed to run against incumbent District Court 16B Judge William Jeffery Moore in a non-partisan election. The term is for four years.

Peterkin, a native of Robeson County, earned his law degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law. He practices law in Red Springs.

“I have filed for this office because I believe there is a need for a shake-up in our justice system,” Peterkin said in a statement. “I want the law-abiding citizens to know that our laws will be enforced, and I want those who do harm to our citizens to feel the full weight of the law.”

The filing period continues until noon on Dec. 21. Candidates can file at the Robeson County Board of Elections office at 800 N. Walnut St.

The primary will be held on March 15.
