LUMBERTON — Fans of deli styled sandwiches have another dining choice in the area, Jimmy John’s Sandwiches, and the restaurant will bring your favorite sub to you.
The restaurant opened in October, just days before Hurricane Matthew. After being closed for nine days, the shop reopened and recently got around to holding a grand opening.
Max Mahlke, a pharmacist at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, and Autumn Pecora, the store’s manager, own the restaurant, which is located at 3211 Fayetteville Road,
Founded in 1983 by Jimmy John Liautaud in Charleston, Ill., Jimmy John’s has about 2,500 stores in 43 states.
Mahlke opened a Jimmy John’s in Fayetteville about six years ago with his father. After his father’s death, Mahlke sold his interest in the business and later decided he wanted to open a Jimmy John’s here.
“It’s a good business and it’s a relatively small investment,” Mahlke said.
His wife Martha is a fan of the nine-grain bread, which is thick-sliced, and the Unwich, which is a lettuce wrap with as many sandwich trimmings as desired, but no bread.
She also pointed out that the online menu includes nutritional values and calorie counts, and the Unwich is a good choice for those on a low carbohydrate diet. But when it comes time to splurge on a few carbs, diners can find those too.
“There’s some days when we all just have to have some bread,” Martha said.
Pecora has been with Jimmy John’s for nearly six years.
“I love the product that we serve. It all makes it worth being part of it,” she said. “We cut all of our own vegetables, all of our own meats. We bake fresh bread all day long, every day. It makes it a better product.”
Pecora emphasizes the importance of forming a personal relationship with customers.
“We have a customer who comes in about twice a week and always orders a Beach Club with no mayonnaise. When he gets out of his truck I start making his sandwich because he knows that when he walks in the door it’s going to be ready for him,” Pecora said. “It’s going to be the same thing he always wants, the same way he always gets it because it’s consistently the same product.”
Sandwiches start at $4.79 for an eight-inch sub and run to $7.79 for the J.J. Gargantuan. Diners have choices of ham, road beef, tuna salad, turkey breast, salami, as well as cheese. There is a veggie sandwich as well and there are sides to choose from: potato chips, a big Kosher dill pickle — whole, halved, or quartered — and cookies for dessert.
