Hunt was joined by assistant superintendents Linda Emanuel, Tommy Lowry and Stephen Gaskins to plant the tree in honor of the 175th Anniversary of public education in North Carolina. Each school district received one of the dogwood trees in honor of the first public school, which opened in North Carolina in Rockingham County on Jan. 20, 1840. This year, the school district also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the merger of the Public Schools of Robeson County.
