PEMBROKE — A biology professor at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke will take part in a panel discussion on climate change and overpopulation at Cape Fear Community College on Wednesday.
Lisa Kelly will participate in “Climate and Perspectives on Overpopulation, Loss of Biodiversity and Stewardship” from 4 to 6 p.m. in Room U170 at the Union Station Auditorium.
Also on the panel are Alina Szmant, a marine biologist at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington; Phoebe Hood, volunteer for sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation; Rhonda Sturgill, of the Nature Conservancy; Chantay Allen, Cape Fear River Watch board member; Karola Luttringhaus, Sarus director, set designer, dancer, Alban Elved Dance Company; and Janette Hopper, a multi-media artist, and former chair of the Art Department at UNCP.
The panel consisting of artists, scientists and volunteers are closely connected with nature and all have a personal love of the world. Together they will strive to identify the most pressing concerns through an open discussion and present solutions. A question and answer session will follow.
Hopper, who retired from UNCP, currently has an exhibition at The Wilma W. Daniels Gallery on the campus of Cape Fear Community College. The show is titled “Natural Milieu: An Altered Point of View, Recent Works and New Genre Collaborations.” The exhibition will continue through June 23. A closing reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on June 23.
“This group of distinguished scientists, artists, and volunteers share with me a healthy relationship with nature and an individual commitment to protect our natural environment,” Hopper said. “The panel will share the work they are doing through visuals and present solutions, inspiration and responses to the audience. Seeking unity and believing that pooling our resources will make our Earth a more hopeful and healthy place.”
