Once again Robeson County has shown what a big heart it has.

All the collecting and counting has been done, and this year $54,136.60 has been donated to The Empty Stocking Fund, enough to provide Christmas for 1,082 children. There were a total of 187 gifts, including an anonymous match of $4,550 today as a result of 182 of those gifts being for at least $25. The average gift was an impressive $189.

Also reported today is the $8,050 that was raised during a bowling tournament that is organized each year by the Lumber River Council of Governments.

We also want to point out the $1,360 raised by students at L. Gilbert Carroll Middle School through a friendly competition. Each year, students look forward to raising the money, one of several charity events they participate in through their school, said Principal Melissa Sellers.

“It’s just a good age for children to learn to give back to the community,” Sellers said. “They enjoy it.”

The effort was sponsored by the school’s Junior Beta Club, but students in all homerooms competed to bring in the most money.

We also need to do a bit of house cleaning. A gift reported Thursday by Buddy and Carol Mozingo was in honor of — not memory of — their children and grandchildren. Our apologies.

We feel a need to say that although 1,082 children will be checked of Santa’s list and that each will receive $50 worth of presents from Kmart or Roses, that there were 420 children registered for The Empty Stocking Fund that we will be unable to help. We hope for a Christmas miracle for those children.

From all of us at The Robesonian, thanks for your continued support of this Christmas tradition — and happy holidays.
