RED SPRINGS — A man charged with robbing a Red Springs home last week now faces an assault charge after the homeowner was thrown from his vehicle as he was driving away, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.
James Elwood Tyson Jr., of Ridge Road in Sea Grove, was charged Saturday with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, according to Maj. Anthony Thompson, chief of detectives. Tyson was arrested Wednesday for breaking and entering and felony larceny in the same case.
Tyson, 52, was inside Wayne Scott’s N.C. 71 home when Scott returned home just before noon on Wednesday, according to Thompson. When Tyson tried to flee in his truck, Scott jumped on top of the vehicle. Tyson pulled out on to N.C. 71 and began to swerve in an attempt to throw Scott off the vehicle, Thompson said. The truck flipped over, landing in a ditch.
Scott, 51, was taken to UNC Health Care in Chapel Hill and has since been released, according to a spokesperson. Tyson suffered minor injuries but did not need medical attention, Thompson said.
Tyson’s bond now amounts to $215,000.
