PINEHURST — Campbell’s Soup Company, which has a plant in Maxton, on Friday received one of the United Way of North Carolina’s Spirit of North Carolina Awards.

Thirty-nine of 74 applicants were presented with awards in Pinehurst on Friday at the United Way of North Carolina’s Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon. The award recognizes organizations that show “outstanding commitment and support to their community through local United Way involvement,” according to Sandra Oliver, United Way of Robeson County’s executive director.

Campbell’s 850 employees throughout Robeson and other counties have pledged to give $203,810 to United Way organizations so far this year, Oliver said in a statement.

“There is a team of employees that go above and beyond their job duties to plan the campaign and to have fun with it,” Oliver wrote.

Campbell’s Soup hosted a breakfast for Leadership Givers, who donate at least $500 in a year, donated hundreds of bicycles and thousands of pounds of food to families at Christmas and also work on Relay For Life.

The Maxton plant manager, Mike Miller, serves on the United Way board of directors and Meredith Hale, director of Human Resources, serves on the Scotland County United Way board of directors.
