RED SPRINGS — A child’s birthday party became the scene of a crime Saturday when one party-goer stabbed another during an argument, according to Red Springs Police Chief Ronnie Patterson.

Eric Jermaine Brown, 40, was stabbed three times, in his neck, chest and back, on Saturday at about 8 p.m., Patterson said. Brown was treated at Southeastern Regional Medical Center and has since been transferred, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Patterson said police have spoken to witnesses at the party and identified all of the guests, but are working to piece together exactly why the argument broke out and why Brown was stabbed.

“The suspect is saying it was self-defense so we’re just crossing our T’s and dotting our I’s,” Patterson said, noting that person had been detained but not charged.

The incident took place in an apartment at the Westgate Terrace public housing complex.

“A call came through county dispatch that altercation was in progress,” Patterson said. “Once an officer arrived, they just tried to diffuse the situation.”

No one else was injured in the fight.

Patterson said he does not think Brown, who lives on Alfonso Drive, is friends with the man who stabbed him.

“I don’t think there’s a relation there, I think they were just at a party,” Patterson said.

The Robesonian isn’t publishing the name of the man who police say did the stabbing because he has not been charged with a crime.

Anyone with information should call Red Springs police Detective Tommy Wright at 910-843-3454.
