LUMBERTON — The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating two “suspicious” deaths, including that of a Lumberton man found dead with a gunshot wound in a ditch Monday morning, according to Maj. Anthony Thompson, chief of detectives.
Lumberton police received an anonymous call at about 12:42 a.m. on Monday that a body had been found on Woodland Avenue off of Alamac Road, Thompson said in a statement. Sheriff’s deputies found the body of 25-year-old William Cain Jr., who lived on Chambers Street. Thompson said Cain had been shot but that investigators were waiting on the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of his death.
The Homicide and Major Crimes units are also trying to determine what killed 59-year-old Leo Cromartie, Thompson said.
Cromartie’s death was reported at 9:32 a.m. on Sunday at his home on Bee Gee Road by a friend who also lives in the home, Thompson said.
“The cause of death is unknown at this time pending an autopsy that will be performed later today,” Thompson said on Monday.
Anyone with information on either case should call the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office at 910-671-3100.
