PEMBROKE — The candidate filing period for anyone wanting to run for one of seven seats on the 21-member Lumbee Tribal Council opens Monday and continues through Sept. 12. The election will be held Nov. 18.

This year, district council seats to be filled include: District 2, Back Swamp, Fairmont and Smyrna, currently held by Terry Hunt; District 3, Lumberton, West Howellsville and Clybourn Pines, currently held by Lesaundri Hunt; District 5, Oxendine and Prospect, currently held by Charles Bullard; District 6, Raft Swamp and North Pembroke, currently held by McDuffie Cummings; District 7, South Pembroke and Union, currently held by Terry Campbell; District 11, Hoke County, currently held by Linda Revels; and District 12, Scotland County, Maxton and Alfordsville, currently held by Walter Lowery.

Because the Lumbee Tribe’s constitution limits anyone from serving more than two consecutive three-year terms on the council, Bullard, Campbell and Revels are ineligible to seek re-election.

The Elections Board office has recently been relocated to its former home behind the Tribal Housing complex on N.C. 711. The office will be open to serve those filing to run for the council on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the temporary phone number for the office is 910-674-8828.

Candidates for any of the positions, all of which are for three-year terms, must pay a $250 filing fee. The fees are used by the Elections Board to help offset the costs of holding the election.

According to Sheila Beck-Jones, the elections chairman, $28,066 has been approved by the Tribal Council and put into its proposed budget for the coming year.

To be eligible to serve on the Tribal Council, a person must be an enrolled tribal member of at least 21 years of age; maintained his or her principal residence in the district for no less than one year; and have no felony conviction.
