Imagine the excitement on your child’s face when they go to the mailbox and pull out a book addressed to them. They’ll race into the house to read their newest treasure, or maybe they will be too elated to wait and sit down on the grass to flip a few pages.

Month after month, your child will grow to anticipate the day their book arrives in the mail. In this high-tech world, is it not beautiful to experience a child’s joy over pulling out a hardback book from an old-fashioned mailbox? The Dolly Parton Imagination Library, sponsored by United Way of Robeson County, is responsible for placing free books in the hands of the youngest readers in our community.

Children age 4 and younger living in Robeson County are eligible to receive one free book each month from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. It is easy to participate in this free program. A parent or guardian must submit an official registration form, which is then approved by United Way of Robeson County. Eight to 10 weeks after the registration form has been submitted, books will begin arriving at the child’s home until their fifth birthday.

The library is thrilled to partner with United Way of Robeson County by serving as a registration site. Registration forms are available at the front desk. Library staffers are happy to assist parents and guardians with the forms before turning submitting them to United Way for approval.

Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to boost your child’s reading skills and love of books before they start school.

You are invited to meet Lillian Blomely, the new Youth Services librarian, at an open house from 4 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 15 at the Lumberton Library. All ages are welcome and a craft activity will be offered for children. Blomely is taking the reins on all children and teen programming, youth collections and services at the library. She joined us on July 14 and is busy planning fun activities for our youth. Vivian Marquez will continue to work with the children, serving as the Youth Services specialist. Thank you for welcoming Blomely to our community.

Fall story time programs will run from Sept. 8 through Dec. 5, with the exception of Thanksgiving week. The story time schedule is: 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Mondays in Pembroke; 11 a.m. on Tuesdays in St. Pauls and 4 p.m. in Rowland; 11 a.m. on Wednesdays in Maxton; and 10 a.m. on Fridays in Lumberton.

Blomely and Marquez will provide outreach programs to preschools and Headstarts in Fairmont and Red Springs.

Baby Bookworm and Mini Maestro will also kickoff in September. Beginning Sept. 9, Baby Bookworm is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Tuesdays. Beginning Sept. 12, Mini Maestro is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Fridays. Babies and toddlers ages 3 and younger are invited to wiggle, giggle and enjoy stories at these free programs. We can accommodate up to 15 babies per session. Registration is not required and participation is available on first-come first-serve basis.

Please visit your library this week and don’t forget to tell your friends with young children about the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
