ANDERSON, S.C. – Newcomer J.C. McFadyen scored an even-par 72 to lead the way for The University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s men’s golf team on Tuesday afternoon as the Braves closed out a six-stroke win at the Anderson Invitational, the team’s first tournament of the year.


“It’s great to start off the year with a win,” said UNCP head coach David Synan. “We have a lot of improvements to make with our short game and scoring, but I am very excited about the direction of the program.”


First-round leader Michael Mullmann shot a 4-over-par 67 on Tuesday to finish at 1-under 143 and take second place. He was one stroke behind North Greenville’s Tucker MacDonald, who won the tournament. Trent Cloninger scored 5-over-par 149 to finish in eighth place and Pembroke native Ian Locklear shot a 152 to tie for 16th. McFadyen finished at 11-over-par 155 for 25th place.


The Braves collectively finished at 16-over-par 592 for the two days, beating Erskine and Milligan by six strokes each.


UNCP football ranked in 2nd poll


LIBERTY, Mo. – The UNC Pembroke football team continued to rake in the national attention on Tuesday afternoon when the Braves checked in at No. 22 in the latest D2Football.com Top 25 Poll, the online publication announced.


The release marked the first time the Braves (1-0) have appeared in the D2Football.com listing since the 2010 season. It is also the first time UNCP has appeared in both national polls since that time as well.


Defending national champion Valdosta State (1-0), who the Braves will play on Nov. 7, continued its reign atop the listing after posting a 36-21 win over Fort Valley State in Macon, Ga., on Saturday. The Super Region 2 squads are joined by four other region squads in the D2Football.com listing, including No. 11 West Alabama, No. 14 Carson-Newman, No. 21 Tuskegee and No. 24 Delta State.


Men’s soccer ranked No. 24 in NSCAA poll


KANSAS CITY, Kan. – After two straight wins to start the season, the UNC Pembroke men’s soccer team earned the No. 24 ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America national poll on Tuesday.


The Braves had received votes in the preseason poll, but had victories over Newberry and Mars Hill to power into the poll.


No. 4 Flagler and No. 15 Lander also represent the Peach Belt Conference in the national rankings.


UNCP continues the season today with a game at No. 10 Wingate.
