LUMBERTON — A 52-year-old Pembroke woman and her infant grandchild have died from the injuries they suffered during a car accident on Wednesday, according to Maj. Tommy Barnes of the Lumberton Police Department.

Myrna Jean Gist, of 1023 Sunrise Road, died at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill on Friday while 4-month-old Breslyn Taylor Thomas, of 1310 Furman Drive, Lumberton died at 1:48 a.m. Thursday at Duke Medical Center in Durham, Barnes said.

Gist and Thomas were traveling on Linkhaw Road in a 1995 Mercedes-Benz passenger car when the vehicle ran off the road to the right, plunged into a canal and trapped them both under water that poured in through the vehicle’s damaged sun roof.

Barnes said Gist and Thomas were unconscious and covered in mud when rescue personnel arrived, and could have been denied oxygen for as long as 15 minutes while unable to breathe. Paramedics were able to get them breathing again and to Southeastern Regional Medical Center before they were transferred to the other hospitals.

Barnes said the cause of the accident is unclear. According to Barnes, Gist was not wearing a seat belt and Thomas was in a safety seat, but was not properly restrained.
