PEMBROKE — A 1-year-old boy was in serious condition after a single-vehicle accident killed his father this weekend — Robeson County’s first traffic fatality of 2014.
Chandler Locklear was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center shortly after 2 p.m. on Saturday, when the car his father, Emmanuel Lynn Locklear, was driving ran off the road and hit a tree, according to 1st Sgt. Ardeen Hunt with the state Highway Patrol.
It was raining as 26-year-old Emmanuel Locklear was driving his 1999 Volkswagen sedan north on Evergreen Church Road about four miles from Pembroke, Hunt said. Between Hayes Road and Barber Shop Road, the vehicle crossed the center line and veered off the left side of the road, Hunt said.
Hunt said Emmanuel Locklear, who lived on Evergreen Church Road, was not wearing a seat belt but Chandler Locklear was in a car seat. Emmanuel Locklear was driving at about 45 mph in the 55-mph zone when he crashed.
Chandler Locklear has since been treated and transferred to another hospital, according to a Southeastern Regional Medical Center spokesperson.
