PEMBROKE — The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and Gibson Cancer Center, an affiliate of Southeastern Health, are inviting breast-cancer survivors to watch a little basketball and help raise money to combat the disease.

UNCP’s Play 4Kay, which is named in honor of Kay Yow, the women’s basketball coach at N.C. State University who died of breast cancer, will be held on Saturday on the Pembroke campus. It will include a women’s basketball game at 1:30 p.m. and a men’s basketball game at 3:30 p.m.

According to organizers, Yow was an inspiration to people fighting breast cancer, and local breast cancer survivors are invited to be that inspiration to others during a halftime celebration when the importance of early detection will be promoted. During halftime of the women’s game, breast cancer survivors will be invited down to the court for a special recognition.

In order to take part, survivors are asked to pre-register at www.uncpbraves.com/athletics/BreastCancerSurvivors. Those who register will receive a free ticket to the event, and their guests may attend for a discounted rate of $4.

Proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. For information, call 910-671-5768 or e-mail jenkin03@srmc.org
