LUMBERTON — A Lumberton woman and a Fayetteville man were found dead Monday with gunshot wounds, according to Maj. Anthony Thompson, chief of detectives for the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.
No charges have been filed in either case, which investigators say are unrelated.
Tamekia Lovetta Owens, 24, was found dead Monday at about 11:30 a.m. in the N.C. 72 West mobile home where she had moved three days earlier, Thompson said.
According to Thompson, Jerry Brayboy, the owner of the mobile home park, went to Owens’ home that morning to clean the carpet. When he knocked on the door, it swung open and he and his son found Owens lying on an air mattress with “blood all around her.”
Thompson said that Owens had been shot, but declined to saw how many times or where she was struck. An incident report listed the weapon as a handgun. Thompson said Tuesday afternoon an autopsy was being performed.
Anyone with information should call Thompson at 910-671-3100.
On Monday night, 34-year-old Reginald Howard, who lived in Fayetteville, died at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center from apparent gunshot wounds.
According to Thompson, deputies received a call at about 10:45 p.m. from Howard’s ex-girlfriend, 34-year-old Tiana Melvin, saying her vehicle had been stolen.
When deputies arrived at her home on Cameo Lane in Parkton, Melvin said Howard had come to her home, taken her phone, keys and van, and threatened her 16-year-old son over the phone. A deputy found the unoccupied van down the road and saw a man running into the woods. While checking the van, Thompson said, the deputy heard gunshots coming from Melvin’s home.
Thompson said the deputy found Melvin standing in front of the home “visibly shaken,” repeatedly saying “he’s been shot.”
The deputy saw Melvin’s son walk through the front yard and discovered Howard lying on the ground with “blood on his clothing and under him” from multiple gunshot wounds, Thompson said. A gun was found nearby.
Thompson said the Sheriff’s Office is meeting with the Robeson County District Attorney’s Office to determine if and what charges would be filed.
