LUMBERTON — Fairgrove Middle School, Rowland Middle Scjool and Union Chapel Elementary are among 74 Title One schools that were recently recognized as Title One Reward Schools for 2013-20214. Fairgrove Middle School was recognized for progress, while both Rowland Middle and Union Chapel were recognized for performance.

“It is imperative that we challenge all students to their highest academic potential, no matter what personal circumstances they may bring to the classroom,” said state Superintendent June Atkinson. “Educators at these schools show us that given the right tools, they can help students meet their academic goals.”

A Reward school is a Title One school that, based on the most recent data available, has been identified as being among the top 10 percent of all Title One schools in one of two categories: Highest-performing school, the school with the highest absolute performance during a number of years for all subgroups, including the all students group, on statewide assessments; or high-progress school, the school that made the most progress in improving the performance of the all students group over a number of years on the statewide assessments.

Title One is the largest federal education funding program for schools. Its aim is to help students who are behind academically or at risk of falling behind. School funding is based on the number of low-income children, generally those eligible for the free and reduced price lunch program.
