Fairmont volleyball tops Lumberton in straight sets

LUMBERTON — The Fairmont volleyball team got a win against some high-class competition on Tuesday.
The Golden Tornadoes (11-2) swept 4A county foe Lumberton (9-4) with scores of 25-20, 25-14, 25-20.
Marsha Clewis led Fairmont with 10 kills and Christa Thorndyke and Reva Locklear combined for 29 assists. Courtney McCormick finished with a team high of 7 digs.
Lumberton won 2-0 in the junior varsity match.
Rams win cross country race
LUMBERTON — Schayne Davis had a first place finish to lead Purnell Swett to the team title in a triangular cross country meet held by Lumberton.
Davis and the Rams had 22 points, including the top three finishers, to beat Lumberton and Hoke, who had 39 and 75 points respectively.
Davis led the way with teammates Josh Bell and David Locklear finishing behind him. Lumberton’s Austin Maidene took fourth and Thomas Bailey took sixth. Hoke’s top finisher was Jazonte Hines, who took fifth.
Lumberton won the girls race behind top finisher Nikki Hansen and Swett’s Chloe Woriax took second. Neither Swett or Hoke had enough girls to qualify for a team score.
Swett tennis sweeps Richmond
PEMBROKE — The Purnell Swett tennis team evened its record with an 8-0 sweep of Richmond.
The Rams (4-4, 4-3 SEC) got wins from Joyce Cummings at No. 1 and the success continued throughout the roster despite injuries that forced players to stray from their traditional roles.
Brooke Huggins, a freshman, played her first career singles match in the No. 5 position and got the win.
“I’m so proud of our girls and the effort they put forth. We had two of our top six players out of the lineup with injuries and the girls really stepped up,” Purnell Swett coach David Leek said. “It’s special when other players can fill in and winning never grows old.”

Lumberton tennis tops Fairmont
LUMBERTON — The Lumberton tennis team swept singles competition in a 7-2 non-conference win against Fairmont.
The Pirates got a win from No. 1 player Abigail Cain, then had three-set victories from Callie Carter and Kaylynn Leggette to help go undefeated. Fairmont got its two wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
