FAIRMONT — Behind five touchdown passes and a 364-yard performance from senior quarterback Jarrod Neal, Fairmont cruised past East Columbus, 54-14, on Friday night to win its second straight Three Rivers Conference contest.

Three of Neal’s scores came in the first half when the dual threat completed passes to five different receivers as the county’s highest scoring offense caught fire at home. Shemar Barfield hauled in six receptions for 140 yards while Quenton Walker rushed for a season-high 122 yards on 14 carries. His 6-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter gave the Golden Tornadoes a 28-12 lead at intermission.

Cedrique Baldwin added 94 yards on the ground, an 8-yard touchdown reception and a 2-yard scoring plunge to highlight his best effort of the season. Senior receiver Da’Shawn Fields broke a two-game scoreless streak with a 13-yard catch in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter.

Fairmont (6-1, 2-1) is a game back of co-leaders Whiteville and South Columbus in the league standings along with St. Pauls and South Robeson.

Bulldogs pummel Vikings

ST. PAULS — St. Pauls dominated on the ground on its way to a 52-6 rout of West Columbus.

The Bulldogs (5-2, 2-1) had 374 rushing yards and five backs with at least 38 yards, led by Chuck Walters, who picked up 115 yards on four rushes. Walters also had the Bulldogs’ first touchdown on a 61-yard put return in the first quarter and scored in the second on an 80-yard run. He scored a third on an 11-yard run in the third quarter.

Quarterback Malik Livingston had 97 rushing yards on seven attempts and also went 8-for-15 passing for 66 yards.

Pinecrest too much for Lumberton

LUMBERTON — The Pinecrest Patriots moved to 7-0 for the first time since 1982 on Friday night with a 52-28 drubbing of Lumberton in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

Two of Lumberton’s four touchdowns came on kickoff returns, one coming in the first quarter that tied the game at seven. It was all Pinecrest from there as the Patriots piled up more than 300 yards rushing to win their seventh consecutive game to start the season.

The loss dropped Lumberton to 0-7.

Devils still winless

WHITEVILLE — Red Springs allowed 33 first-half points and continued struggling from there Friday night during a 67-7 loss to Whiteville.

Blake Greene hit receivers on 21-for-35 passing for 189 yards, one interception and connected with Dwayne Fairley for the Red Devils’ (0-7, 0-3) only touchdown. Fairley finished with three receptions for 41 yards. This season hasn’t gone as planned for a program that’s advanced to the third round of the playoffs in consecutive seasons.

Red Springs now must win its final four games to become playoff eligible.
