LUMBERTON — Seven games into his first season, Joe Salas is out as head football coach at Lumberton, several sources close to the situation confirmed to The Robesonian on Thursday morning.

Defensive coordinator Ron Cook will serve as interim coach over the final four games according to Lumberton athletic director Mackie Register. Public Schools of Robeson County athletic director Jason Suggs confirmed the decision but declined further comment.

“The team was notified during a meeting this morning,” Register said.

When reached by The Robesonian, Salas declined comment until Thursday evening.

His players were surprised.

“We were shocked at first, but some people knew it was coming I think,” senior receiver Bryan Carpenter said. “I haven’t seen coach (Salas) all day.”

The Pirates are 0-7 this season and travel to Hoke County on Friday.
