ST. PAULS — The St. Pauls High School football team felt the pressure but never caved in a 45-43 win over Red Springs to finish the regular season.
The Bulldogs (8-3, 5-2) used constent scoring, getting two touchdowns in three of the four quarters, to hold off a late-blooming Red Springs (2-9, 2-5) team that made a final stand behind senior quarterback Blake Greene.
The two programs executed their varying offenses to near perfection, each finding the gaps with their approach.
St. Pauls, as usual, rallied behind the run.
Chuck Walters was the main benefactor in the first half, getting the ball 12 times and milking it for 105 yards. He consistently carried it forward, setting up short runs by Daymien McMillan, who took them in for two first half touchdowns.
The approach remained similar the rest of the game with three Bulldogs finishing with more than 100 rushing yards. Walters had 173, and McMillan and quarterback Malik Livingston each had 103.
McMillan found the endzone most often, finishing with four touchdowns, but Walters had versatility.
Following a hit in the third quarter that shook up Livingston, Walters filled in as passer for a play, taking a handoff and throwing a pass to Tim Billinger in the endzone.
Livingston remained in the game and threw for 70 yards and one interception.
The offense put the Bulldogs up 21-7 at halftime, but the Red Devils’ air attack came right back, utilizing whatever it needed to to make a comeback.
Red Springs even started the game with an onside kick, which they recovered. On the ensuing drive, Greene ran the ball in on one of his team’s three rushes in the half.
Otherwise, he primarily looked to C.J. McGeachy, hitting him on medium length routes for consistent games of 15-17 yards each.
McGeachy finished the first half with 95 yards on seven receptions and Greene went 10 for 18 passing for 158 yards in the first half.
It opened up the pass game in the chirpy second half, as he went from three receivers that caught passes in the first half to six in the second, relying less on one and more on the group as a whole.
Greene threw his 100th touchdown pass in the second half on a 40-yard screen to DeAndre Hallman and was involved in all six of the Devils’ touchdowns, rushing for two and passing for four. McGeachy had two touchdown catches.
Final stats were not available for Red Springs.
