Three county teams reach playoffs, South Robeson hosts

ROWLAND — Despite losing back-to-back games to end the regular season, South Robeson is Robeson County’s only football team that will host a first-round playoff game this season it was announced Saturday afternoon by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

The third-seeded Mustangs (6-5) entertain Atkins on Friday, a 2-8 squad from Winston-Salem led by former Red Springs coach Eric Puryear. St. Pauls and Fairmont each finished 8-3, but fell victim to tough draws and are on the road against higher-seeded teams who won conference championships.

“You get what you deserve and we didn’t win the conference in a split league,” St. Pauls coach Trey Sasser said. “You go where you’re placed. If you take care of yourself, you’re fine.”

Since moving to 5-1 on Oct. 4, South Robeson has lost four of its last five games and hasn’t been able to control the line of scrimmage like the Mustangs managed to do during the first half of the season. Andrew Hill is the area’s leading rusher with 1,133 yards, but running room up front has been limited in recent weeks.

“We aren’t playing very well right now, so hopefully we can get something going,” South Robeson coach Stephen Roberson said before beginning prep for the Mustangs’ first home playoff game in more than a decade. “We’re a little banged up, but that’s not excuse. We have to get better on both sides. Our guys aren’t used to be playing games that matter this late in the season.”

St. Pauls gets a crack at a second consecutive nine-win season and perhaps more when the Bulldogs open postseason play at fifth-seeded Northside Jacksonville (8-3) in the 2AA bracket. The Bulldogs went 3-0 against Robeson County teams this season, but suffered losses to Gray’s Creek, East Columbus and Whiteville.

The setback on Nov. 1 to the previously conference-winless Gators likely cost St. Pauls a home game.

Fairmont returns to the playoffs under first-year coach Randy Ragland after the Golden Tornadoes were banned last season. Fairmont was the third-place 2A finisher in the Three Rivers and travels to Ayden-Grifton in the first round, the Eastern Carolina Conference champion that has won five straight games since starting the season 0-6.

“They might be 5-6, but this one’s not going to be easy,” Ragland said. “We’ve got about a three-hour bus ride ahead of us against a team that’s playing well. Hopefully we’ll be able to work some things out defensively and get it going in the right direction.”

One of two unbeatens in the small 4A bracket, Southeastern Conference champion Scotland earned a No. 1 seed in the east region. Co-league champs Whiteville and South Columbus are high seeds in the 1AA and 2A brackets, respectively.
