HOPE MILLS — Lumberton boys basketball coach Mackie Register returned to the floor shortly after Wednesday’s 64-63 loss at South View, searching for an official to provide an explanation for what transpired minutes earlier.

After Travis Suggs’ baseline runner with 4.5 seconds left gave the Pirates a one-point lead, the Tigers were granted another eight-tenths of a second during a timeout and as result, notched a putback at the other end from Will Crockett following a miss as time expired.

Fans rushed the court, Register threw his hands in the air and the Pirates headed to the locker room with season-opening disappointment.

“In 21 years of coaching, I don’t know if I’ve ever been any madder than I am right now,” Register said after never receiving an explanation as to why time was added prior to South View’s final inbounds play. “What bothers me is how the refs didn’t see that. They go over, put almost another second on the clock … I don’t know why it happened. It shouldn’t have counted.”

After trailing by as many as seven in the second half, Justice Sampson’s 3-pointer from the right wing tied the game at 58 with 1:12 left to play. After Xavier Grissett’s block at the other end, Colby Johnson’s fifth long-distance jumper of the contest put the Pirates ahead with less than a minute remaining.

South View coach Wendell Wise called timeout and drew up an isolation play at the top of the key for senior guard Austin Calvin. Calvin pulled up earlier than expected during the possession and drained a 30-footer from way beyond the top of the key to knot it at 61.

Lumberton took possession out-of-bounds with 20.3 seconds left.

“The kid hit an incredible shot to put them in position,” Register said. “That was a big-time shot right there.”

Suggs dribbled to his left, then back to his right before finding the baseline open for the floater over top of 6-foot-10 forward Tyler Creammer. Lumberton’s bench and visiting crowd erupted, thinking the game was over with 4.5 seconds left and South View having the length of the floor to go.

Suggs finished with a career-high 17 points while Johnson chipped in 15. Creammer poured in a game-high 21 with 11 rebounds and three blocks.

“I was real pleased with the effort from our team on the road,” Register said. “We learned a tough lesson, but it’s only the first game.”

Third-quarter run dooms Lumberton girls

Points off turnovers and South View’s dominance in transition led to a 58-34 loss in Wednesday’s season opener for Lumberton’s girls.

Three players reached double figures for the Tigers including Jasmine Brown who scored a game-high 19. Brown’s seven points during an 11-1 run to open the third quarter blew open what was a close game for much of the first half.

Lumberton senior guard Azaya Graham, after leading Robeson County in 3-pointers made last season, hit 2-of-4 shots from behind the line and finished with a team-high 14 points.

Lumberton returns to the floor Friday against Fairmont at 6 p.m.
