PEMBROKE — The University of North Carolina at Pembroke didn’t have to look far to find its next football coach.

In fact, Shane Richardson’s office is just down the hall.

UNCP’s defensive coordinator who has held the interim head coach tag since Pete Shinnick resigned on Jan. 31 was introduced as the program’s new leader on Friday inside Bob Caton Fieldhouse during a special ceremony hosted by athletic director Dick Christy and the board of trustees.

Richardson’s been on staff since football returned to Pembroke in 2006 and retains the Braves’ ‘family-first’ mentality and motto for the program.

The former Northern Michigan linebacker who has coached the last 10 years at the collegiate level salvaged UNCP’s 19-player recruiting haul in crunch time this month when he began handling day-to-day duties in Shinnick’s absence 72 hours before National Signing Day.

Richardson expressed interest in the opening at the time, but needed to secure last-minute signatures from prep seniors before going in-depth about his future within the program.
