Robeson county youth golfers recently finished towards the top of the pack when The Pinehurst First Tee program hosted a two-day event at the country club.


Madison Deese and Bella Oxendine took first and second place in the nine-hole girls competition. Landon Buck won the nine-hole boys tournament, with Ethan Evans and Orri Maynor taking third and fifth, respectively.


Chris Ha took fourth place in the 18-hole boys division with scores of 85 and 94 for a two-day total of 179. Playing from the white tees, Dustin Pauls went 88-86 — 174 for fourth place, Kajun Hunt scored 86-90 — 176 for fifth place, and Malachi Woods, Dakota Locklear and Dalance Locklear finished sixth, seventh and 10th.


From the blue tees, James Locklear finsiehd eighth with a 98-92 — 190.


Purnell Swett golfer Meredith Godwin, who is looking for her second trip to state in a row this year, finished second in the girls high school division with days of 85 and 82 for a total of 168. Caroline Ha took fourth in the division with Madelyn Benton finishing seventh.


In U.S. Kids play, Walter Ghaffar scored a 4-over-par 76 to tie for 2nd after the first day of the the Pinehurst 12U tour at Pinehurst #5. Ghaffar followed that event with a 1-over-par 73 for a win at Pinehurst no. 7 the next day. The 12U group plays from the senior tees.


The golfers are all part of the Jamie Locklear Golf Academy based out of Pinecrest Country Club.


Pinecrest CC


Reedy Branch Baptist Church will be hosting its annual golf tournament on Sept. 6 at 9 a.m. The tournament is a three-person captain’s choice with money going to assist mission projects throughout the community. Play will be flighted with prizes for the first and second places in each flight and a prize for the second to last place finisher.


There is a fee of $60 per player or $180 per team with hole sponsorships available for $100. Fees include one toss per player and a steak dinner. For information call Rev. Hilton Woodell at 910-740-4268 or Curlie Locklear at 910-739-9408.


Fairmont GC


The results of the Senior Shootout at Fairmont Golf Club today, Tuesday Aug 19, were:


Wayne Beasley, Sammy Yow won the championship flight of the senior shootout on Tuesday, beating Mel Britt and Tommy Sipka.


First flight winners were J.D. Revels, Marlon Lowry with runner-ups Tommy Maynor and David Lowry. Second Flight winners were William Stone, Marty Davenport, who edged out James Belch and Tommy Belch


Special event winners were Steve Lawson, Mel Britt, Murphy Woods and Al Wall.


The next Senior Shootout will be held Tuesday with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Call the pro shop at 910-628-9931 for information and registration.


David Lowry and Tommy Maynor won the Aug. 12 senior shootout, beating Jeff Tedder and Greg Tedder. First flight winners were Jerry Jolly and Tommy Newberry, who beat Bobby Benton and Jerry Long. Steve Lawson and Willard Storm won the second flight, beating Layton Britt and Bill Wieties. Special event winners were Ed Tew, Bill Wieties, Greg Tedder, Willard Storm, Mel Britt and Wayne Beasley.


The club’s 2014 Member-Guest invitational will be Sept. 13 and 14 with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Call the pro shop for information and registration at 910-628-9931.


Carolina Plantation GC


The Foundation of Robeson County Community College will be holding its 30th annual Clifford Bullard Memorial Golf Tournament on Sept. 18 at Carolina Plantation Golf Club, formerly known as Cliffwood Golf Course.


The tournament supports the world of the RCC Foundation in its mission to provide financial support for the school’s students, activities and programs, especially as the need for scholarship assistance rises. The tournament raised more than $22,000 and the foundation expects a record-breaking event.


The course’s weekly senior invitational starts at 9 a.m. every Wednesday. For $20 seniors get a round of golf, a continental breakfast and lunch.
