Purnell Swett tennis tops Scotland
PEMBROKE — The Purnell Swett tennis team got a 6-3 win against Scotland in its first Southeastern Conference match of the year on Thursday. In singles action Kali Strickland, PS, def. Sallie Wegner 6-0, 6-4; Camryn Ellis, S, def. Nikana Oxendine 6-0, 6-0; Anna Griswold, S, def. Genna Locklear 1-6, 6-3, 10-8; Mary Scott, PS, def. Grace McIntyre 6-0, 6-1; Brooke Huggins, PS, def. Karrigan Campbell 6-0, 2-0 retired; and Myla Clark, PS, won by forfeit.
In doubles Wegner/Griswold,S, def. Strickland/Oxendine 8-6; Locklear/Scott, PS, def. Ellis/McIntyre 8-6; and Huggins/Clark, PS, won by forfeit.
LHS soccer rallies vs. Gray’s Creek
LUMBERTON — The Lumberton soccer team had three unanswered goals to beat Gray’s Creek on Thursday in a non-conference matchup. The Pirates allowed two goals by Tyler Nelson in the first 12 minutes but rallied back with goals in the 17th and 22nd minutes to tie it going into halftime. Miguel Bello had the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 60th minute.
St. Pauls falls to Fairmont
ST. PAULS — The Fairmont volleyball team traveled to St. Pauls Thursday night and came away with a three game sweep of the Bulldogs. The Tornadoes won 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-13) to improve their record to 3-0 on the season. St. Pauls drops to 0-4 with the loss.
LFA registration coming soon
LUMBERTON — The Lumberton Football Association and Lumberton Recreation Department will be having youth football signups on Sept. 2, 3 and 4 at Bill Sapp Rec Center from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Children must be 6-years-old and younger than 13 by Aug. 31. There is a $30 registration fee for players aged 6 and 7 and a $50 fee for players ages 8 through 12. Volunteer coaches are also needed. Visit lumbertonfootball.net for information.
LRD starting soccer registration
LUMBERTON — The Lumberton Recreation Dept will be having youth soccer registration starting Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Bill Sapp Rec Center. Registration will continue until Sept. 12 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is a $10 fee and children must be age 5 and but younger than 13 on Aug. 31st. Volunteer coaches are also needed.
