AOTM: Swett's Bird soars on court, in class
PEMBROKE — Laura Bird is well aware of the parallels between athletics and academics. In her mind, the math — in more ways than one — is simple. “I think in anything that you do, if you don’t put time in and you’re not willing to work and willing to do your best … ,” Bird said before finding the right analogy. “It’s like an essay. If you don’t take your time and work on it, you’re not going to have a good outcome or a good grade. And the same thing in basketball, if you don’t practice hard, you’re not going to do good in the game and it shows.” Purnell Swett’s senior standout relentlessly puts in the time and effort — and it shows. Bird’s achievements in the classroom and on the playing fields earned her February’s Mountaire Farms/The Robesonian Scholar Athlete of the Month award. The AOTM program’s mission is to highlight male and female senior student-athletes within Robeson County who carry a 3.0 GPA or higher. Nominees need to also be recognized by their coaches for outstandi...

AOTM: Swett's Baker displays many talents
PEMBROKE — He runs, jumps, flips and hits. And when he’s not doing the aforementioned, he’s hitting the books. His name is Tyler Baker, a three-sport senior at Purnell Swett High School who is apart of the Rams cross country, cheerleading and baseball teams. His achievements in the classroom and on the playing fields earned Baker January’s Mountaire Farms/The Robesonian Scholar Athlete of the Month award. The ATOM program’s mission is to highlight male and female senior student-athletes within Robeson County who carry a 3.0 GPA or higher. Nominees need to also be recognized by their coaches for outstanding sportsmanship and perform with superior ability in athletic competition. “He is just the perfect example of a student-athlete,” Swett cross country coach Jim Adams said. “He’s been one of the reasons why we’ve been so successful in cross country the last few years.” Baker, an all-conference runner the past two years who’s best time finishing time is 18 minutes, 1 second was n...

AOTM: Red Springs' Oxendine a natural leader
RED SPRING — Red Springs High School’s Chelsi Oxendine sits on the bleachers, her right leg wrapped in gauze and elevated next to a pair of crutches. It’s a tough spot for a senior co-captain to be in, yet Oxendine, who injured her knee last week, is smiling as she watches her girls basketball teammates run up and down the court. Despite being sidelined, the senior is very much part of practice — leading, motivating and helping her fellow Red Devils. “We only have three seniors and I’m one of those who helps keep us together,” Oxendine said. “We’re just trying to get that bond and try to get all the underclassmen to know that it takes a bond in and out of school to get a good basketball team together.” Oxendine does the same for Red Springs’ student body, serving as the class president. Her unwavering leadership qualities and outstanding production as a student-athlete has earned Oxendine The Robesonian/Mountaire Farms Scholar Athlete of the Month for December. The program’s mis...

AOTM: Lumberton's Bailey strives for success
LUMBERTON — Michael Bailey’s philosophy for success is simple. “Make every second you have count,” Bailey said. The senior at Lumberton High School appears to be doing just that. Bailey’s achievements as a student-athlete earned him The Robesonian/Mountaire Farms Scholar Athlete Award for the month of November. The program’s mission is to highlight male and female student-athletes within Robeson County who excel on the field, in the classroom and in their local community. “It’s exciting. It’s nice to be recognized for working hard,” Bailey said of the honor. Academically, Bailey, son of Joe and Laura Lynn, is currently ranked second in his senior class of 455 students with a 4.8056 GPA. He also has first- and second-place Science Olympiad honors to his name and is a National Honor Society student, among other accolades. On top of that, Bailey is an Eagle Scout, a badge he earned when he was only 14 years old. The average age of boys earning the Eagle Scout rank is 17. “It tea...

AOTM: Swett's Kenworthy named October's scholar athlete
PEMBROKE — It’s not hard to pick out Purnell Swett High School’s Erin Kenworthy on the volleyball court. She’s the one constantly talking, motivating her teammates. Cut to the classroom and she’s the one springing up her hand, asking questions. A natural leader, Kenworthy has displayed exceptional performances as a student-athlete at Purnell Swett, earning her The Robesonian/Mountaire Farms Scholar Athlete Award for the month of October. The program’s mission is to highlight male and female student-athletes who excel on the field, in the classroom and in their local community. “I try to motivate the girls,” the senior captain Kenworthy said. “I’m a loud person. I’m always talking. When I come on the court after a substitution the girls are like, ‘I’m so glad to see you back on the court’, because I like to talk the whole time — talking makes the game go a lot easier because everybody’s communicating.” It’s showed. This fall, the Swett senior helped lead the Rams to a second-pl...

Davis, Ashe named Mountaire's top scholar-athletes
LUMBERTON — One put achieving the scholar-athlete of the year award on her to do list, the other is pleased to receive the honor and hopes the next group can surpass his achievements. And now Callie Davis and Dominique Ashe call themselves the first winners of the Robesonian/Mountaire Farms Scholar Athlete of the Year award. Davis, a three-sport athlete at Lumberton, received the initial scholar athlete of the month honor in September, while South Robeson’s Ashe was tapped for his selection in October. A good deal has occurred since Davis and Ashe garnered their honors. Davis was picked to the all-Southeastern Conference soccer team as well as the all-region squad. As a cross country runner, Davis finished in the top five at the all-county meet all four years. “It’s great to be picked to win this,” Davis said. “It’s great to represent my school and a great way to wrap up by high school sporting career.” Ashe participated in football, basketball and ran track for the Mustangs t...

Lumberton's Fanning shines on opposite fields
LUMBERTON — Whenever the name Fanning is heard in Robeson County, the majority of people immediately think of golf. And why shouldn’t they with Dyrck Fanning winning five Robeson County Golf Championships. But his son, Andrew, is doing his best to make people think of other things now when a Fanning is mentioned. Andrew completes on the Lumberton High School cross county, swimming and tennis squads. The one sport conspicuously absent from the list, golf. Andrew quickly laughs at the omission and explains it could be because of his father’s prowess on the course. “He’s known for golf, but I’m not as good as he is,” Andrew said. “I guess being around it for so long, it kind of had the opposite effect on me. I tried it, but I wasn’t born with the good golfing gene.” While Andrew, a member of the Pirate golf team for two years, admits his father is a better golfer, there is one thing he knows he is better then Dyrck was in school — academics. Currently, Andrew has an unweighted GPA ...

Brooks racks up ton of A’s: Three-sport athlete carries a 3.87 GPA at Lumberton
LUMBERTON — She doesn't know how she does it, but she does it semester after semester. Lumberton's Damilia Brooks continues to rack up A's on her report card like she's scoring goals on the soccer pitch or draining 3-pointers on the hardwood. Brooks, who carries a 3.87 grade point average, was selected as this month's Robesonian/Mountaire Farms Scholar Athlete. The senior recently added another sport to her repertoire by joining the Pirate golf team this fall. For Brooks it's another excuse to avoid hitting the books, because she also plays on a traveling soccer team based in Moore County. "On Mondays we would have golf matches and Tuesdays we would be off," Brooks said. "Wednesdays I would have soccer practice, so I would either be going to Southern Pines or to golf matches or practice. "Most of the time, I wouldn't get back home until 8 or so. Right after school I would go to my parents' work to do homework because when I got home I was too tired. But I would only have like 4...

Ashe stars on gridiron, in classroom: South Robeson senior carries 3.34 GPA, ranks 6th
ROWLAND — As he walks off the practice field, he knows his day isn't over. And just like on the gridiron, South Robeson's Dominique Ashe knows he has more hitting to do, just this time the objects won't hit back. After spending more than 10 hours at school, Ashe knows he can't relax. He will head home and crack open his books for nearly three hours to begin his homework. Ashe, this month's Robesonian/Mountaire Farms Scholar Athlete, has maintained this type of schedule since his freshman year. Ashe's hard work has paid off in the classroom. The senior carries a 3.34 grade point average and ranks sixth in his class. While other students would be pleased with such a high standing, Ashe is not. "I'm disappointed I was so low," Ashe said. "After my freshman year I was No. 1. I was No. 3 as a sophomore and now I'm No. 6. I know I didn't apply myself as much as I did as a freshman. I was clowning around, but now I'm fully focused." Ashe also has another reason to refocus his attenti...
