LUMBERTON — Bennie Ray Chavis, 61, of 895 Wiregrass Road, Lumberton, departed this life on Feb. 22, 2013.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Saddletree Church of God, Bishop Kenneth Locklear, the Revs. Donald Chavis, Leroy Scott and Ricky Jacobs officiating. Burial will follow in the Lumbee Memorial Gardens.

He was born in Robeson County on Jan. 23, 1952, and was preceded in death by his parents, Raeford and Delessie Chavis.

Chavis was an active member of Saddletree Church of God. He served on Pastor’s Council, taught Sunday School and was the leader of the visitation team. If anyone ever needed a special prayer, he was the one to call on. He was a wonderful mentor, touching many lives over the years. Chavis was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He loved everyone, but most of all he loved Jesus.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Chavis; two sons, Bender and wife Tanya, Clayton and wife Wilena; five grandchildren, Connor, Bendrick, Walker, Brady and Katen; three brothers, Raeford Chavis, Willie Chavis and Donald Ray Chavis; two sisters, Doris Dial, and her twin, Gracie McGirt, all of Lumberton; and two special family members, Chanae and Zavery.
