LUMBERTON — The Lumberton City Council on Monday is expected to authorize the city to apply for a grant that could make Lumberton look a little more appealing to an industry that is expected to bring 40 jobs to Robeson County.

The company, part of “Project Flow,” requested that the city apply for a $150,000 building reuse grant from the North Carolina Rural Center, according to City Manager Wayne Horne. The grant will help the company with renovations totaling $310,000.

“Project Flow” includes a $1 million investment in building and machinery, and is expected to pay an average wage of $15 an hour plus benefits.

Greg Cummings, the county’s industrial recruiter, has declined to give any further details on the project.

Also on Monday, the council is expected to:

n Hear the results of bids for the Tanglewood Sanitary Sewer rehabilitation project from Brandon Love, director of Planning and Neighborhood Services.

n Accept a grant of about $4,000 from the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services for the Pine Street Senior Center.

n Approve a change order from Chancel Builders in the amount of $6,357 for modifications in the construction of the new Lumberton Police Department building at 1305 Godwin Ave.

n Approve contracts with Espy Services and Davenport Lawrence, advisory firms that look for ways that the city can save money.

n Approve about $3,600 in tax releases for the month of November.

n Approve a solid waste franchise agreement with Robeson County for removal of waste at Robeson Community College.

n Approve the purchase of 4 acres of land at about $23,000 beside Lumberton Municipal Airport as part of the Acquisition & Obstruction Removal Runway 5 approach grant, which will pay for 90 percent of the purchase price.

n Adopt a resolution declaring city property as surplus to be sold at an auction by Lloyd Meekins Realty and Auction Company on Dec. 27.

n Adopt a resolution naming Horne as the agent for Mosquito Control.

n Set a date for a public hearing on a rezoning and conditional-use permit for 511 E. 2nd St. Melody Campbell, who operates Carolinas Home Care Agency Inc. at the property, wants to add a mental health day treatment for adolescents to the facility.

n Set the date of a public hearing for a conditional-use permit for a home at 411 Carthage Road. K&L Veterans’ Homes and Services, previously housed at 903 Glenn St., wants to relocate there.

n Set the speed limit for Sessoms Street, near East 5th Street, to 25 mph and approve posting of “We Love our Children” signs. The street currently has no posted speed limit.

n Designate $4,650 in community revitalization funds.

Take a long term view when providing incentives.

We must incorporate a strategy of "attract and retain" to get new industries into our area and to keep the ones we already have.

Hopefully, the city and the county are working together to keep this one from getting away!

Does anyone remember the commisioners and councilmen saying that if we spend 10 million dollars on the new park we would have all kinds of industries and businesses looking to move here?

Well, the park is nearly finished and no new industries....

Make them pay the money back from their retirement and own personell bank accounts.
