PEMBROKE — When a reverse wide receiver pass was called from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke sideline in the third quarter Saturday, former middle school quarterback turned college wide receiver Jamal Williams got happy in the huddle.

"I was already thanking coach (Pete) Shinnick when I saw the personnel coming on the field before we ran the play," Williams said. "I just had to make sure I threw a good ball."

Williams took the handoff in motion from Cory Smith and found Jamelle Banks wide open for a 26-yard touchdown pass as the Braves took care of business for the 10th straight time at home, routing Webber International, 30-3, in front of a record crowd of 4,843.

"We still have some things to clean up, but the end result is pretty good," Shinnick said. "Our students were fantastic and have helped turn our home field into a huge advantage for us."

UNCP registered 499 yards of total offense and converted 10-of-16 third down attempts in the final home contest of 2009. With Monday's first Division-II regional rankings of the season looming, Shinnick said it was vital that his team have a dominating performance.

"We've done everything we could do now to be in the playoffs except beat Carson-Newman," Shinnick said. "We'll have an idea of where we are Monday. We would've liked to score another one, but what can you do."

The Braves must place in the top six in the Super Region 2 rankings at the end of the season to make the playoffs, something UNCP failed to accomplish at 9-1 a season ago.

"These are the rankings that count in Division-II," UNCP director of athletics Dan Kenney said. "Strength of schedule and record against in-region teams goes into account with poll voters."

Despite building a commanding lead 21-3 at halftime, linebacker Fred Williams said the team was fueled by a pep talk from Shinnick to re-energize the "Code Black" defensive scheme. Shinnick's words of wisdom worked as UNCP (5-1) allowed just 43 yards to the Warriors after intermission.

"We allowed too many yards early and came out a little flat," Williams said. "We play fast with relentless hustle and we played together."

Since the 35-22 loss to Carson-Newman, the Braves have given up two field goals in eight quarters.

Smith completed 22-of-30 passes for 212 yards to lead the Braves' spread attack on offense. His 20-yard scoring toss to L.J. Johnson with 1:18 to play in the second quarter capped a three-play, 40-yard drive triggered by a fumble recovery.

"Looking at film, we knew there were holes to be exploited with Webber's defense," Smith said. "We are viewed as a running team, but the short passes worked well today."

Representing the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the Warriors (0-5) were led by a one-man show on offense as freshman quarterback Torrence Moise gained 172 of his team's 218 total yards.

A late field goal with 25 seconds left from Taylor Baskett provided the game's final points. Baskett's kick was by no means running up the score, according to Shinnick, in hopes of impressing poll voters.

"Taylor is a very good kicker, but hasn't kicked well the last two games," Shinnick said. "We were just trying to give him some confidence. If we would've wanted to score another touchdown, I would have spread them out."

These coaches and players should be applauded for there play, from day one they've played so well..its like from there very first game theyve played like they had a team for years, its hard to start anew program from scratch and startoff winning from the start...it really pays to have a good coaching staff..
