LUMBERTON — A former standout athlete at Fairmont High School has been charged with a felony in an accident that killed two ex-teammates, according to a statement by Erich Hackney, an investigator with the Robeson County District Attorney’s Office.

Dymaggio Alexander Gilchrist, 18, of 301 Gilchrist Road in Marietta, is charged with two counts of felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired and reckless driving in the July 2012 accident that killed Nokolma Dakota Hunt, 18, of 1716 N.C. 904, Fairmont, and Tyreke Dashon Addison, 18, of 1102 E. Eighth St., Lumberton. Gilchrist, who just finished his freshman year playing football for a university in Ohio, was arrested on Monday and bond was set at $30,000.

Gilchrist and two other passengers in the vehicle, Devont’e Shaquan Govan, 17, of 142 Leroy Road, Marietta, and Darius Justin McCallum, 18, of 6175 Wiregrass Road, Orrum, were also injured in the accident, but have recovered.

According to an initial investigation by Trooper David Raynor of the state Highway Patrol, Gilchrist was driving a 1994 Ford on N.C. 41 just south of Fairmont at 7:32 p.m. on July 9 when it left left the roadway to the right and traveled 109 feet before striking a tree.

According to Hackney, his investigation showed that Gilchrist was “play acting” while driving down the highway just before the accident, dropping his head and closing his eyes several times while the car was traveling at approximately 55 mph. In addition, a video that was made 90 minutes before the deadly accident by one of the occupants was recovered by the District Attorney’s Office and depicts those involved, including Gilchrist, smoking marijuana. Hackney said a blood test confirmed that Gilchrist had marijuana in his system.

Gilchrist saw limited action as an outside linebacker for Malone University in Canton, Ohio, during the recently completed football season. As a senior at Fairmont High in 2011, Gilchrist was named the county’s Player of the Year after compiling 28 touchdowns and rushing for 1,228 yards. He also started at free safety and led the team in interceptions.

Addison,a wide receiver and running back, was a two-time all-county selection by The Robesonian and paired with Hunt, a tailback, led the Golden Tornadoes to conference championships in 2010 and 2011. Addison also played on the varsity basketball team and was the starting center-fielder on the baseball team. Hunt was a utility player on Fairmont’s baseball team.

This is a sad situation that Dymaggio Alexander Gilchrist is in. Im sure this accident was not intended on "purpose", it was just a careless mistake and at the time of it all im sure all these young men where in the car enjoying themselves. Many fingers are being pointed towards this young man and i understand why. I see it as if many people just want "revenge" towards him and the only "revenge" is having him behind bars. Two mothers lost their child in a wreck and another mother will be losing her child behind bars. At the end of the day, the families will have to live with a sad situation and putting all the blame on Dymaggio will not bring them back and will not solve anything. Some people just need to learn how to "FORGIVE AND FORGET" !!!

You know, this is a sad situation. The boys were all friends, and I couuld not imagine this happening to my child. I say this PARENTS its time you take charge and talk to your children about drugs and alcohol. Let them know the risk involved... KNOW what they are doing in your house!!! Parents KNOW their friends, don't be ignorant to the signs! I hope every young person who reads this realize that YES marijuana is a DRUG and the consequences can be deadly! My prayers are with all the families involved. As tough as this may be I have to say I think it is fair. It doesn't matter if the young men who were killed had been smoking with him, they are dead, he is not. He was the driver, and as a driver you have to be responsibile for everyone in the car.

Ok first as you reference young people, remember that you were young too once right? Maybe a while ago but nevertheless you should understand how it's I'd being young and dealing with temptations to do the things your not supposed to do. Not trying to make up for this just pointing it out. Also marihuana and alcohol don't make people do things like this. People abuse them and don't make good choices. There was no alcohol involved in this accident anyways. The marijuana did not posses his body and overtake him to "play act" with the car, then send him back to reality.

Deep down I know he didn't mean for it to happen. Just made a bad choice and lucked out completely. Everyone of us has pushed the limit with something, someway and somehow. Not knowing that if we luck out the consequences could be far worser then we could've imagined. . Maybe you lucked up or lucked out but the consequences were minimal. Who knows. Unfortunately for him he made a bad choice and the consequences are enormous.

Since they've waited six months I'm pretty sure they have a tip top strong case. His best bet is a plea. Since he has no record his sentence will be somewhat lenient I'm sure, depending on the lawyer he gets. No way with all the evidence they have will he flat out beat it. Maybe if Johnnie Cochran was still living RIP.

That is all

He should be charged, what good is laws if they dont abide by them, woe unto the lawyers and doctors, money prevents jail, we reap what we sow, God will do the punishing, the legal system is messed up. No money, jail time, money gains freedom. Man has respector person, God doesn't.

No matter the sentence, nothing can take away the fact that two young men who were his friends died. He will have to carry this for the remainder of his life. My prayers go out to all involved. Young people who think marijuana doesn't affect you, please think again.

Yes they were all good friends but did his careless reckless and immature actions possibly contribute to their death??? Or how about at first when the story was "they ran into a puddle". Yes it had just got done raining that day but rain had nothing to do with the accident. Hints why he's being charged after 6 months. They take 6 months to decided do obviously they looked at it from every single angle. Those investigators aren't stupid they have degrees to catch people slipping #dropsthemicexitstageright!!!!

@BigQueen I feel bad also, but this "child" CAUSED all of this and should be charged. It's unfortunate, but as the driver he is responsible..
