The Health Services Department for the Public Schools of Robeson County donated $500 to The Empty Stocking Fund for the second straight year, doing so instead of exchanging gifts among each other. 'We work with needy children every day and the need is great, so this is a way to help children have a good Christmas.' said Kathryn McDaniel, supervisor of Health Services.

The Empty Stocking Fund is definitely ending on a high note.

There are 25 more donations to report today, including the largest gift yet, for $5,000, made in memory of the late Gary Powers, a former county commissioner, in honor of Pam Rancke, and also in memory of the children killed in Newton, Conn. The gift has been made anonymously.

Students at Carroll Middle School raised an impressive $1,455, ensuring Christmas for 30 of their peers, the Health Services Department with the public schools contributed $500 instead of exchanging gifts among themselves, and the Kiwanis of Pembroke chipped in with $320. As always we encourage you to take a look at all those who contributed.

The gifts push the fund’s total to $39,937, but that doesn’t include a $25 match for each of the 217 gifts that have been for at least $10. We need 22 more gifts today and on Friday to take full advantage of that match of up to $6,000.

A quick apology to Amy Smith Mercer, a sixth-grade reading teacher at Deep Branch Elementary School whose name we messed up yesterday. Her class raised $620 for the fund, doing so in memory of a classmate who recently died.

Friday at 2 p.m. is the last day to donate to the fund, so the mail is no longer an option. If you wish to contribute, please come by our office at 2175 Roberts Ave. to do so. Although we have checked about 800 children off Santa’s Christmas list, more than twice that many have been deemed eligible to receive help from the Department of Social Services, which administers the fund.
