To the Editor,

I thank The Robesonian for its article covering the county’s King Day celebrations. I was pleased that actual quotations attributed to me were almost completely accurate.

However, I deny other statements attributed to me. I did not refer to blacks or any race when I said that my exposure to life in Robeson County as a whole was limited while growing up in Parkton. I did not say that I witnessed “racial inequality” when running for judge in 1996. I spoke of the black community facing challenges regarding political power, but not “equality.” I did not say that I was determined to help rid the county of “racism.”

These statements and their reasonable inferences, especially your use of the words “racism” and “racial inequality,” are significant misstatements of my actual remarks. My purpose in my remarks and otherwise is to be positive and to promote unity. I fear that your account of my remarks may well serve the opposite purpose. Therefore, I took time to respond.
