PEMBROKE — Ben Miller didn’t have the words for his seniors following Wednesday night’s gut-wrenching 80-78 loss to Georgia College.

What could The University of North Carolina at Pembroke men's basketball coach say to a team that rallies back from a double-digit deficit only to lose on a dramatic 3-pointer.

“Losing like that, I just didn’t know what to say,” Miller said. “Our seniors played their hearts out and I feel bad for those guys. You can always second guess your decisions as a coach but I’m not going to do that.”

Following a floater by Braves guard Cortez Brown with 1:05 remaining, Georgia College’s Shaun Keaton nailed the game-winning shot with 12 seconds left to write a disappointing end to UNCP's Senior Night.

Brown finished with 19 points as UNCP (5-21, 2-17 PBC) lost its fourth game this season by a single possession and 11th straight contest overall. Wednesday’s contest featured eight ties and 14 lead changes, including three in the final 1:32.

Miller said the narrow defeat was like most in his first season — tough to swallow. He added that he was pleased with his team’s effort level and willingness to adjust to a new system after a coaching change.

“These guys have accepted my coaching style but haven’t been rewarded with wins,” Miller said. “I really feel for our seniors. They worked hard all year and we are really hurting right now.”

Georgia College (20-5, 14-5 PBC) was led by Keaton’s 20 points and a 14-point effort from Justin Brown. After hitting just 3-of-19 shots from beyond the arc in the first half, the Bobcats converted 7-of-13 after intermission to offset UNCP’s 44-38 rebounding advantage.

After trailing by two at halftime, Georgia College went on a 21-4 run early in the second half to grab its largest lead of the game at 61-49 with 14:03 left to play. The Braves withstood the furious flurry by the Bobcats and recaptured a 71-70 advantage on Brandon Thomas’ layup with just under four minutes remaining.

Braves guard Demarcus Lyday led all scorers with 22 points and hit 8-of-12 shots from the field.

John Walters and David Moore were also playing in their final home game for UNCP and added 10 and three points, respectively.
