PEMBROKE — Make it six in a row on the diamond for The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Derek Funk’s head-first slide into home in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Braves a dramatic 11-10 victory over Chowan on Wednesday afternoon.

Funk was mobbed by his teammates as the dust settled at the plate after Edmund Locklear’s single through the left side provided the walk-off win. UNCP overcame a 9-3 sixth inning deficit to improve to 28-13 this season and 2-0 against the Hawks.

“We didn’t play well early,” UNCP head coach Paul O’Neil said. “We let them hang around and you just can’t do that against a quality opponent.”

After Chowan (20-13) scored seven runs in the top of the sixth to take a six-run lead, the Braves countered with three runs in the bottom half, three in the eighth and one in the ninth to force extras.

“We kicked the ball around there in the sixth,” O’Neil said, referring to his team’s two errors in the sixth. “Our guys bounced back in the second half of the ballgame and played well.”

The Hawks took a 10-9 lead in the top of the ninth after Bryan Hill’s solo homerun to left off UNCP reliever Bryan Collins. The Braves answered in the bottom of the inning after pinch-hitter Jason Coker knotted the score at 10 with an RBI single to center with one out.

Coach O’Neil reiterated the importance of quality at-bats to his players before the Braves came up to bat trailing by one in the ninth.

“Singles win ballgames in extra innings and I told them that,” UNCP coach Paul O’Neil said. “Homeruns are nice but singles get men on base. The key is finding a pitch to hit a putting a good swing on it.”

UNCP senior Kevin Dietrich continued his torrid stretch at the plate, notching a career-high five hits in six trips while launching his fourth homerun in the last three games.

Dietrich ranks second in the Peach Belt Conference with an eye-popping .435 batting average and an 11-game hitting streak. In the last 23 games, Dietrich has raised his average 97 points and gone 47-for-93 (.505) in the leadoff spot.

The Braves return to action Friday with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Lander beginning at 2 p.m. Junior Matt McGovern (5-0, 3.38 ERA) and sophomore right-hander Bryan Willis (3-2, 4.50) will be on the mound for UNCP.

Lander (24-13, 8-8 PBC) holds a one-game lead over UNCP for seventh place in league play. The top eight reams earn a trip to the conference tournament in May.
