LUMBERTON — The Alive After 5 free concert series returns Thursday with a performance by Band of Oz, giving locals an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and show off their moves to some live beach music.
The event, which is free to the public, will take place on the corner of Third and Chestnut streets from 7 to 9:30 p.m, with the band facing the downtown plaza and the fountain area. There will be a dance floor set up for people to groove to the eight-member band that features a full horn section.
Burgers and steak sandwiches will be available from Rock’n Dean’s, and ice cream will be sold from Boo Doodle. Tickets to purchase beer will be available.
“People can bring their lawn chairs and relax. We expect about 800 to 1,200 people to show up. All the bands that we have scheduled have won some type of Cammy Award,” said Connie Russ, downtown development coordinator for the city of Lumberton. The Cammy Award is presented to beach music bands and beach music series.
“Last year, our event was actually nominated for one of the awards,” Russ said. “So we have a really good event.”
Thursday’s event is the first of five, which will be held every two weeks on Thursday.
“It’s a very good mixture of everything, some of the songs you’ll recognize and some of them you won’t,” Russ said. “Everyone just loves this event. I think this is the seventh year we have done this and it has really picked up in momentum. There is a great line of sponsors and without them it would be impossible to put on. People just look forward to it.”
Other bands scheduled to perform are Jim Quick and Coastline on May 17; Craig Woolard on May 31; Carolina Breakers on June 14; and Holiday Band on June 28.
In case of rain, all concerts will be rescheduled. The forecast for Thursday night is clear skies with temperatures about 80 degrees.
A cornhole tournament that had been scheduled has been canceled.
