LUMBERTON — A Maxton woman is accused of the shooting death of a man early Friday that followed an argument, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Ruth Ann Jones Moreno, 47, of Papa’s Drive, was charged with second-degree murder and placed in the Robeson County jail without bond.

According to sheriff’s Maj. Howard Branch, Moreno and her daughter went to the home of Michael Conrad Ray, 51, at 844 Old Baker Road, to discuss “an incident with a child.” Branch would not comment further on the alleged incident.

“She stays across the field, basically, about a half mile from him,” Branch said. “She and her daughter had walked over to his residence and confronted him, then the daughter left the mother there.”

Sometime after that, about 3 a.m., Moreno got a shotgun and fired it at Ray one time, killing him, Branch said. It is not known who owns the gun or where Moreno got it, he said.

Moreno returned to her home and called 911, Branch said. There was no one else in Ray’s home when the shooting occurred.

Moreno has a file with the N.C. Department of Correction that includes assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a female and second-degree trespassing.

IF she shot him for messing with her grandchild, I hope I'm on the jury. That will be a hung jury.

To all that feel they need to put someone down you might need to get your fact down first. If He would have done anything to her grandchild then she would have not been with him all week.We on Baker rd know the deal but when someone uses their on grandchild to try to get by with Cold BLOODED MURDER is a Disgrace to Their on Family. How Do two People go to someone home and MURDER THEM AND ONLY ONE GOES TO JAIL. YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT ONE THING THERE ARE NO LAWS IN ROBESON COUNTY.IF YOU WANT TO FIND THE LAW LOOK IN MOST CHURCHES PARKING LOTS.SHE NEEDED MORE THAN A COMB!!

Why didn't they at least give her a chance to comb her hair? I've heard why she shot him and if it's true she should have shot him again...You don't just mess with someone's grandchild and think you'll get away with it...

That's what's wrong with people now!!!! Instead of letting the law deal with, they think they can put the law in there on hands and take care of it... Now this man is dead and look we're she will be the rest of her life.. God said thou shall not kill!!!!!

Happy 236th
Thousands of people were dazzled by the fireworks display at the annual Lumberton Family Fourth celebration at the Lumberton High School football stadium on Tuesday. Many watched the display from parking lots and sidewalks around town and from their own front yards. Before the show, attendees were treated to a performance by the Carolina Breakers, and a stunt by the Army Rangers, who parachuted onto the football field.
